MetaTrader is a trading platform used to analyse markets, place orders, and manage open positions. It is one of the most widely used retail platforms for forex and CFD trading.
It comes in two main versions, MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5, and provides live quotes, technical indicators, multiple chart timeframes, drawing tools, order types, and account history. You connect it to a broker, who supplies the prices and executes the trades you place through it.
MetaTrader is the platform, not the broker. The same software runs across many different brokers, so your prices, spreads, and execution come from whichever broker holds your account, not from MetaTrader itself. It also supports automated trading through Expert Advisors, scripts, and custom indicators, though those tools support analysis and execution and do not guarantee a profitable result.
You want to trade EUR/USD through your broker.
You open MetaTrader 5, check the EUR/USD chart, apply a moving average, and place a buy order.
Once the order executes, you use MetaTrader to watch the open position, the stop-loss level, the take-profit level, and your account margin.
