Troy ounce definition
A troy ounce is the standard unit of weight for precious metals, equal to about 31.1035 grams. Gold, silver, platinum, and palladium are all priced and traded per troy ounce.
When a metal is quoted as USD 2,350, that price applies to one troy ounce. The unit comes from the medieval troy weight system and remains the global benchmark for bullion, futures, and metal CFDs, which keeps pricing consistent across markets.
A troy ounce is heavier than the standard avoirdupois ounce used for everyday goods, which weighs about 28.35 grams. Confusing the two understates a metal's weight, since one troy ounce is roughly 10 percent heavier than the ounce on a kitchen scale.
